"R. M. S. MAURETANIA"

"R. M. S. MAURETANIA" WAS BUILT AS A "SUPERLINER", ALONG WITH HER SISTER SHIP, "R. M. S. LUSITANIA" BY CUNARD LINE. SHE WAS LAUNCHED IN LIVERPOOL (UK) ON 20th SEPTEMBER, 1906, AND HAD HER MAIDEN VOYAGE ON 16th NOVEMBER, 1907. SHE WAS CONVERTED AS A TROOP & A HOSPITAL SHIP DURING WW1, COMPLETE WITH CAMOUFLAGE PAINT, RETURNING AS A CRUISE SHIP AFTER THE WAR. SHE WAS FINALLY SCRAPPED, IN ROSYTH, SCOTLAND, IN 1935, WHEN CRUISE TRAVEL DECLINED IN POPULARITY.

A rare piece of Maritime History - a Drinks (or possibly a Wine Cooler) Stand taken from one of the Saloons onboard "R.M.S. Mauretania", c. 1907. The top is engine- turned Electro-plated, with a rail (to prevent glasses falling off in rough weather!)and bears Mauretania's name inscribed underneath in the wood. The mahogany pillar has ebonised rings to it, and goes into a heavy, domed base. The Stand measures 45ins. (114cms) high, the top's diameter is 10ins. (25.5cms), and the base is 11.5ins. (29cms) across.
