full-sized r.n. binnacle

ITEM

No. 2788

A Royal Navy Full-Sized (4ft. 10in.) Binnacle, by Kelvin Hughes. This is a more sought after type, with this particular style Compass housing. The body is solid mahogany, and has the original maker's plaque, with emergency lamp, with a blanking cap for when the lamp has been removed, and the Chart tube also has its cap. This was an external binnacle, and as you can see from the photograph, the lower part of the dial shows where sea water has leaked in. This is dated around the mid-20th. century (c.1940's). For current ease of movement, this binnacle has been fitted with four heavy duty castors, with a breaking strain of 125lbs. each, as this weighs 3cwt!
